Itīs not all sand mandalas and love and peace...
What youīre about to read here may shock you, may shake your faith in the world as you know it. If so, good, what else is the Internet for if not to change your world view and leave you sniveling in the corner, afraid to leave your house. This particular piece of news shocked me, and Iīm like an Internet Ninja-Pirate. Itīs true. Iīve been on the Internet for years, and I even read a newspaper once, so brace yourselves people, you may not be able to handle this as well as I did.
Not all Buddhists are nice. Some are EVIL, EVILE even.
When I say evil Iīm not talking about those Shaolin monk types who will kick your ass and then trek 5 miles over ice and snow to return a baby caterpillar to its mother. Iīm talking about the Tibetan Buddhists, the ones weīve all been feeling oh so sorry for ever since Tibet was overrun by China and the Dalai Lama was forced to flee in exile.
As it turns out, maybe they kind of deserved it because they werenīt very nice after all. The history of Tibet and its Buddhists is fraught with murder, torture, and world class misogyny. In fact, there was even a great civil war where two major Buddhist factions faced off against one another and killed each other with great abandon. Well now, thatīs certainly interesting isnīt it. Something to meditate on perhaps.
If thatīs not hardcore evil enough for you, letīs delve a little further into the dark and sordid history of Tibet. Youīve probably been lead to believe that they spent their time meditating and spinning yak wool into soft orange robes. It is true, occasionally they did meditate and tend to the yaks, but at other times they would torture people in their monastery dungeons which were tastefully decorated with dismembered human body parts.
This was all made possible by the fact that Tibet was ruled by the Priests, who were certainly not kind to those who stepped outside the legal lines of good behavior. Common punishments involved blinding people, lopping off their limbs, tearing out their tongues, and many other cheerful and forgiving types of punitive treatments. They do much less of that these days obviously, well as far as we know anyway because it is awfully difficult to get into Tibet and climb those dammed mountains and see what theyīre up to.
The West has had the yak wool pulled firmly over its eyes it would seem, and chooses to ignore the darker side of these folk even when it is written down and shoved in their faces. The most important religious text in Tibetan Buddhism, the Kalachakra Tantra contains writings which require one who wishes to advance to the highest levels of spirituality to cross the barrier of right and wrong through the practice of extreme mental and physical exercises.
Sounds good so far right? Sure, because youīre probably thinking that they push big rocks up the mountain, or juggle ten yaks at once or something. Unfortunately, you couldnīt be further from the truth. The recommended exercises involve killing, lying, having sex with lower class girls (whatever that means), cheating on your partner, and getting roaringly drunk. When confronted with this most Western practitioners laugh it off and encourage you to go make a pretty sand pattern, which is fun, and will probably distract you.
However, seriously, maybe itīs time we stopped burying our heads in the multi colored sandpit and paid a little more attention to the reality behind the esotericism. Or maybe we should take those Tibetan Buddhists a little more seriously, because damn, theyīre hardcore. They wonīt just kick your ass, theyīll kick your ass and use it to decorate their wall.
