In this second instalment of our exciting global whirlwind tour of prostitution, we explore the hinterlands, the borderline countries where prostitution may kind of sort of be legal in some respects if you pick the right moment when the moon is waning and you hold your tongue just right. You know the drill. Donīt ask, donīt tell. Hear no evil, see no evil. The Devil is in the details. Long Live the Queen. The owl hoots twice in the grassy darkness.
The Blind Eye Countries These are countries in which prostitution is technically illegal, but in which it wonīt matter too much if you get caught, as long as youīre doing it in the right way, of course.
Thailand Itīs illegal in Thailand, but that hasnīt stopped it from becoming a huge part of Thai culture. Some studies estimate that up to 95% of Thai men over the age of 21 years have slept with prostitutes, and other state that 450,000 Thai Men visit prostitutes daily. There sure is a lot of loving going on in Thailand. In fact, from the sounds of things, picking up a hooker isnīt all that much different from picking up a burger and a few beers. Having sex with prostitutes is part of a guyīs night out in Thailand, and itīs quite common for groups of friends to pick up a few hookers and spend a night getting jiggy with them, and for prostitutes to form part of initation ceremonies for High Schoolers and University students.
Iran Now, Iran ostensibly dissaproves of prostitution, and the penalties for engaging in it are cheerful things like execution by stoning or firing squad. A firing squad always seemed like a bit of a waste of bullets really, but I suppose it is nice to vary your methods of cold blooded murder of the weak. Anyway, back to that matter at hand. Iran is listed here because, although prostitution will get you pretty damn dead pretty damn quick, you can always marry the woman for half an hour. Thatīs right, welcome to Iran, one of the homes of the ītemporary marriageī. If youīd like a few hours of carefree enjoyment, well just get married for the duration. Itīs perfectly legal and there are no obligations to the woman as occur in many Western cultures, where she gets half your house.
The Philippines Prostitution is illegal in the Philippines, but due to the influx of US Military personel there was a rather large demand for sex. The Government responded by providing the services of bargirls, or īCustomer Relations Officers.ī These young ladies all wear government issued IDīs, and are available to anyone with a hotel room and USD $40.
Sweden Sweden is a bit confused. Probably because theyīre so damn nice. In Sweden itīs legal to be a prostitute, but it is illegal to purchase the services of a prostitute. This is due to Swedenīs view that prostitution is a crime against women, therefore, the woman can never be considered to be at fault, which is almost the opposite extreme from our friends in Iran, except without the bloody slaughter.
